PARKERS PRAIRIE, Minn. (KWAD) — A 25-year-old Park Rapids man was seriously injured early Saturday when a demolition-derby car fell off a jack and struck his head inside a garage northeast of Parkers Prairie, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the man as Elijah Hensel. Investigators say Hensel was working beneath the vehicle when it slipped from the jack and came down on him. People inside the garage were able to lift the car off Hensel before first responders arrived, a move deputies say likely prevented further harm.

Emergency crews stabilized Hensel at the scene and requested an air ambulance due to the severity of his injuries. He was flown to a St. Cloud hospital for treatment. His current condition was not immediately released.

The Sheriff’s Office is reviewing the incident, which appears to be accidental. No other injuries were reported. Officials did not specify what kind of jack was being used or whether additional safety stands were in place.

With the summer and fall car-repair season in full swing, local responders used the incident as a reminder to follow garage safety best practices: work on stable, level surfaces; chock wheels; use jack stands rated for the vehicle’s weight; and avoid getting under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
