WADENA, Minn. — A longtime symbol of connection at Astera Health is now part of history. This week, construction crews completed the demolition of the pedestrian tunnel that once ran beneath Highway 71, linking the Wesley Building and Legacy Campus. The area will be sealed with reinforced concrete to prevent future water issues.

Though the tunnel is gone, its legacy remains. For decades, it played a vital role in protecting patients and staff from traffic and harsh weather while streamlining care between campuses. It even served as a storm shelter during emergencies, including the 2010 tornado.

As road construction continues in and around Wadena, Astera Health urges patients and visitors to plan ahead. Emergency and appointment access to Astera Health is available via multiple routes. Follow blue hospital road signs through mapped detour routes. Visit AsteraHealth.org and 511mn.org for the latest detour and traffic updates.

Current Impacts:

  • Highway 10 Detour (July 8–Late August): Closed to through traffic between Hwy 71 and Otter Tail Co. Rd. 75. Temporary signal at Hwy 29 and Co. Rd. 75.

  • Highway 71 Detour (Until Late August): Closed to through traffic between Hwy 10 and Juniper Ave. Temporary all-way stop at Co. Rd. 20 and Juniper Ave.

  • Local Access Maintained: Businesses remain open. Use side streets, back entrances, and expect gravel or temporary surfaces. Pedestrian detours are in place.
