MINNEAPOLIS, MINN (KWAD) – Farm Aid, the long-running benefit concert supporting family farmers across the United States, is making its Minneapolis debut this fall. Organizers announced early Tuesday morning that the annual event will take place on Saturday, September 20, at Huntington Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus.
The star-studded festival, founded in 1985 by Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp, was launched in response to the farm crisis of the 1980s. Nelson was inspired to act after hearing Bob Dylan speak at Live Aid about the financial struggles of American farmers due to falling land values and soaring interest rates. That first concert raised more than $7 million for family farmers.
This year’s Farm Aid will once again feature its founding trio — Nelson, Mellencamp, and Young — along with an impressive lineup that includes:
-
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds
-
Trampled by Turtles
-
Billy Strings
-
Margo Price
-
Eric Burton (of the Black Pumas)
-
Waxahatchee
-
Jesse Welles
-
Madeline Edwards
Organizers say more artists will be announced in the coming weeks.
