Wiehoff, Drevlow finish 1-2 as Sauk Centre boys win home Invite; Minnewaska Area girls take fourth

Cross country results generic

SAUK CENTRE, Minn (KWAD) – The rolling fairways of Lynx National Golf Course in Sauk Centre served as the backdrop for one of the season’s most competitive cross country showdowns Tuesday as 11 boys’ teams and 10 girls’ squads lined up for the Sauk Centre Mainstreeter Invite. The host Sauk Centre boys put on a dominant display to capture the team title while the girls took fifth, while Minnewaska Area’s girls placed fourth in a battle between Section 6A competitors.

Sauk Centre’s blueprint for success was clear from the opening mile: push the pace, control the race, and pack the scoring runners tightly together. Junior Logan Wiehoff set the tone, powering away late to win in 16:49.74. He was backed up by senior Jacob Drevlow, who finished runner-up in 17:11.02, giving the Mainstreeters an early 1-2 punch. Senior Landon Buysse added a crucial top-10 finish in seventh (18:16.54), while teammates Ben Friedrichs (12th, 18:30.42), Zaron Olmschenk (16th, 18:46.17), and Evan Peterson (21st, 19:02.98) all crossed in under 19:10. That depth sealed a comfortable win with just 35 team points, well ahead of runner-up Rocori (61) and third-place Melrose (80).

Though not in the team-title conversation, Minnewaska Area showed flashes of what the future holds with a pair of standout freshmen. Dietrich Reidenbach surged into the top 10, placing eighth in 18:20.32, while classmate Jase Ritter wasn’t far behind, clocking 18:41.86 for 14th place.

On the girls’ side, Little Falls (37 points) and New London-Spicer (44) were the class of the field, but the focus for local fans was on how Minnewaska and Sauk Centre measured up against strong competition.

Minnewaska placed fourth with 140 points, led by sophomore Nori Song, who ran a confident race to finish 12th in 20:36.19. Behind her, senior Piper Citrowske-Lee (29th, 22:36.83) and freshman Jillian Deutsch (31st, 22:39.28) crossed just seconds apart, showing solid pack running. Ninth-grader Maia Larson (33rd, 22:58.80) and sophomore Sydney Ankeny (35th, 23:06.66) rounded out the scoring five. Senior Lauryn Ankeny (36th, 23:20.81) and junior Sophia Wallin (47th, 24:14.12) provided key displacement points.

Sauk Centre finished fifth with 147 points, paced by junior Kahlen Suelflow, who cracked the top 10 in 20:12.25. Freshman Victoria Linscheid (23rd, 21:53.88) and senior Olivia Marsh (34th, 22:58.99) added mid-pack finishes, while seniors Alivia Nathe (41st, 23:51.62) and Megan Uphoff (42nd, 23:52.03) gave the Mainstreeters a steady scoring five.

Both teams now get a week off, getting ready for Minnewaska’s home meet at Minnewaska Golf Club on Tuesday, October 7th.
