Hawley Volleyball Rallies From Two Sets Down to Win Back-to-Back Class AA State Volleyball Championships

ST. PAUL, Minn (KWAD) – The Hawley Nuggets saved their best volleyball for when it mattered most.

Down two sets to none and on the brink of a sweep, the Hawley Nuggets completely flipped the match, storming back to defeat the Chatfield Gophers 3–2 (20–25, 21–25, 25–17, 25–16, 15–8) in the Class AA state championship Saturday afternoon at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul.

It’s a storybook finish for the top-seeded Nuggets, who capped their season with a gritty, five-set comeback to claim their second-straight Class AA state title.

Three-seed Chatfield came out red-hot and looked every bit like the team ready to seize the moment. Behind the heavy arms of Trindy Barkeim and Amaya Harmening, and the precision setting of Harper Goldsmith, the Gophers jumped to a 7–0 lead in the opening set and never trailed, winning 25–20. Barkeim and Harmening combined for eight kills in the first set, and Chatfield hit .226 as a team. The Gophers kept the pressure on in set two, again controlling long stretches of play. Barkeim and Cora Bicknese attacked from the pins, while Goldsmith continued to spread the ball around and keep Hawley guessing. Chatfield took the second set 25–21 to grab a commanding 2–0 lead.

At that point, Chatfield had out-killed Hawley 30–21 and led the match in sideout percentage, looking poised to sweep.

Everything changed in the third set.

Hawley’s front line—Katie Vetter, Annaka Johnson, and Audrina Liebenow—took over at the net. The Nuggets’ block, which had been mostly silent through the first two sets, suddenly became the difference-maker. Hawley jumped in front 10–4 in set three and never looked back, rolling to a 25–17 win. The Nuggets hit .205 in the set while holding Chatfield to .000. Vetter and Johnson found their rhythm offensively, and Liebenow teamed with Vetter to form a wall on the right side.

The fourth set might have been Hawley’s most complete effort of the night. With the block dialed in and the defense feeding their transition game, the Nuggets sprinted to a 13–6 lead and forced multiple Chatfield timeouts. Hawley hit .222 in the set, while the Gophers managed a negative hitting percentage (-.029). The Nuggets closed it out 25–16 to force a decisive fifth set.

By the end of the night, Hawley finished with 10 total team blocks, while Chatfield recorded none—a massive difference in a five-set championship match.

All the momentum belonged to Hawley as the teams headed to set five, and the Nuggets wasted no time proving it.

Johnson and Vetter were unstoppable to start the deciding set. Hawley raced out to an 8–1 lead at the switch, fueled by kills from Johnson, Vetter, and Liebenow, plus a block by Johnson and setter Sella Fleming. Every time Chatfield tried to swing back into the match, Hawley’s defense had an answer.

Vetter delivered big again late, mixing in kills and a key service ace to push the lead out of reach. Up 14–8, the Nuggets finished it fittingly at the net—Liebenow put away the final ball from Fleming to seal the 15–8 win and the state title.

Vetter, Fleming and Johnson were named to the Class AA All-State Team after the conclusion of the match.
