TODD COUNTY, Minn. (KWAD) — The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has confirmed the presence of emerald ash borer (EAB) in Todd County for the first time, bringing the total number of affected counties in the state to 60.

State officials say MDA staff identified infested ash trees along State Highway 28. The discovery has prompted an emergency quarantine across all of Todd County, restricting the movement of firewood and ash materials in an effort to slow the spread of the destructive insect.

Emerald ash borer, first detected in Minnesota in 2009, is a highly invasive species whose larvae feed beneath the bark of ash trees, cutting off the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. Infested trees often show signs such as increased woodpecker activity, bark splitting, and distinctive S-shaped tunnels beneath the surface.

The MDA routinely issues quarantines in areas where EAB is detected to help contain the spread. Officials are urging residents to avoid transporting firewood and to remain vigilant for signs of infestation.

To provide guidance and answer questions, the MDA will host a virtual informational meeting for Todd County residents and tree care professionals:

Emerald Ash Borer Virtual Informational Meeting
Thursday, May 14, 2026
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Registration is available at the MDA website.

The public is also invited to comment on a proposal to make the emergency quarantine permanent. Comments will be accepted through June 5, 2026, with a recommendation to adopt the formal quarantine on June 10.

Residents can submit feedback during the virtual meeting or by contacting:
