BRAINERD, Minn (KWAD) – Investigators with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) say multiple persons of interest have been identified as authorities continue investigating the cause of the Flanders Fire in Crow Wing County.
The wildfire, which began Saturday near Flanders Lake east of Breezy Point, has burned 1,666 acres, or approximately 2.6 square miles, according to Tuesday’s update from the Minnesota Interagency Coordination System. Officials said the fire is now 60% contained.
Authorities say the fire originated near the north shore of Flanders Lake, roughly halfway between Breezy Point and Highway 6.
DNR officials are asking residents in the area, particularly those on the western side of the lake, to check trail cameras and home surveillance systems for footage recorded between Friday, May 15, and Sunday, May 17. Anyone with potentially helpful video is asked to contact the DNR at 218-639-0782.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire.
County Road 11, which had previously been closed between Crosslake and Highway 6 during firefighting operations, has since reopened to traffic. Officials also lifted all evacuation orders and notices at noon Tuesday, allowing residents to return to their homes and properties.
Fire crews continue mop-up operations and reinforcement of containment lines as conditions improve. Authorities are still asking the public to avoid unnecessary travel into the fire area while emergency crews remain on scene.
Meanwhile, officials announced Tuesday that the Stewart Trail Fire near Two Harbors is now 100% contained. That wildfire burned more than 350 acres along Minnesota’s North Shore.
