Detroit Lakes, MN – The Becker County Museum is proud to announce the opening of its newest featured exhibition, Butterfly Odyssey: Saving Rainforests, One Flap at a Time, on view from October 4, 2025, through April 4, 2026.

Rainforests are vital to all life on Earth. They provide everyday products like bananas, coffee, and chocolate, while also producing nearly one-quarter of the world’s oxygen. They are home to almost half of the world’s animal species—yet these rich ecosystems face serious threats from over-harvesting and habitat destruction. Butterfly Odyssey invites visitors of all ages to discover how sustainable practices, including butterfly farming, can help protect both people and planet.

This high-energy, hands-on exhibition transforms visitors into rainforest butterflies on an unforgettable journey of survival. Guests will:

  • Test their luck in the wild—can they beat the odds as one of the 2% of caterpillars that survives predators and hazards?
  • Experience life on a butterfly farm—collect eggs, feed caterpillars, and undergo metamorphosis firsthand.
  • Race to fill global butterfly orders—ensure farm-raised chrysalids reach destinations before taking flight.
  • Explore other sustainable rainforest practices—from fair-trade crafts to farmer-owned coffee cooperatives.

By learning about butterfly farming and other conservation-focused enterprises, visitors will see how everyday choices connect to the health of tropical ecosystems. Sustainable solutions like these protect rainforests, support local communities, and preserve biodiversity for future generations.

Butterfly Odyssey is more than an exhibit—it’s an immersive adventure that brings the global importance of rainforests right here to Becker County,” said Becky Mitchell, Executive Director of the Becker County Museum. “We want families, students, and community members to walk away inspired by the small but powerful actions that can help save our planet.”
