WADENA, Minn (KWAD) — The National Weather Service in Grand Forks has issued a Flood Watch, now in effect through Thursday morning, for several counties in west central and northwest Minnesota, as well as southeast North Dakota.
Areas under the watch include Wadena, Clay, Mahnomen, Hubbard, Otter Tail, Becker, and Beltrami counties in Minnesota, along with Cass, Ransom, Richland, and Sargent counties in North Dakota. Cities affected include Fargo, Moorhead, Bemidji, Park Rapids, Fergus Falls, Wahpeton, and Detroit Lakes.
The watch comes as forecasters warn of the potential for flooding caused by excessive rainfall. Atmospheric moisture remains high ahead of a slow-moving cold front, raising the risk of intense rain and possible flash flooding throughout the day and night.
Impacts could include flooding in rivers, streams, and creeks, urban and poor drainage flooding, water-covered roads and low-water crossings, and blocked storm drains and debris-filled ditches
Earlier Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service also issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook, noting the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms. A few storms may continue this morning in west central Minnesota, bringing lightning, hail, and localized flash flooding.
There’s also a 20% chance of severe storms this afternoon with large hail, damaging winds, and even an isolated tornado possible. Looking ahead, the NWS says there’s a Level 1 risk for severe weather again Friday afternoon and evening. Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay alert, monitor weather updates, and be prepared to take action if flooding develops. Spotter activation may be needed.
