DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KWAD) — Sunshine, a light breeze off the beach, and a finish line packed with cheering families set the scene for the 30th Annual Dick Beardsley Races on Saturday, more than 1400 runners laced up for the 5K, 10K and Half Marathon.

“It’s so awesome to see you all here this morning,” Beardsley said before the race. “I can’t believe we’ve been doing this for 30 years already.”

Beardsley once again ran in the Andy Beardsley Memorial 5K, which was named in honor of Dick’s son who passed away in 2015. Beardsley also brought racing legend Bill Rodgers with him to Detroit Lakes this year. Rodgers won four Boston Marathons and three New York City Marathons between 1976 and 1980. Rodgers, now 77 years old, also ran the 5K. Rodgers finished his 5K in 33:12, and Beardsley finished in 52:08.

honoring the Detroit Lakes legend. The milestone edition delivered everything from blazing winning times to deep hometown podiums—especially in the 10K, where Detroit Lakes runners swept the top two spots on the men’s side.

The 5K belonged to the Ruebkes of Ada—Spencer winning the men’s title (15:44) and Molly (20:03) the women’s—while plenty of regional names hit the chute. From Detroit Lakes, Elijah Nordby (9th, 23:49), Ian Miller (11th, 25:01), and Brody Baker (16th, 25:56) were among the first wave of locals. Michael Fitzlaff (Bertha) grabbed 4th overall (20:26) and Bryton Jobe (Bertha) crossed in 26:39 for 19th place. Rick Crume and Daniel Bellefeuille (both Glyndon) finished in 26:24 and 27:55, respectively, while Ken Gabriel (Park Rapids) clocked 25:33 and Jerry Huebsch (Perham) 29:13.

On the women’s side, Megan Washek (Audubon) was 5th in 24:34, Kenzie Baker of Detroit Lakes took 9th in 25:53. DL added Ashley Baker (30:15), Emma Miller (30:26), Sue Sorensen (30:59), Katherine Stearns (31:53), Macey Schaefbauer (32:27), and Elaina Hintsala Fronden (32:28).  Rebecca Balsiger (Audubon) 11th in 26:29, Hallie Cossette (Audubon) 13th in 27:20, Amber Gabriel (Park Rapids) 16th in 28:00, Courtney Eckhoff (Henning) 23rd in 28:51, and Mandy Danielson (Frazee) was 31st in 29:57.

In the 10K race, Detroit Lakes runners Jeremiah Ulschmid and Dan Johnson controlled the men’s 10K from the gun, breaking the tape in 38:00 and 39:06, respectively, to deliver a hometown sweep.  Nathan Klair (7th, 43:19), Cole Weber (8th, 44:28), Joshua Tougas (14th, 49:29), Ryan Bjorklund (19th, 51:37), Joe Mollberg (22nd, 51:49), and Thomas McCollum (39th, 55:10) all of Detroit Lakes also had top 40 finishes. Jacob Baer of Frazee was 10th overall with a time of 48:25, Michael Stein of Ottertail (20th, 51:40) and Arlyn Rusche of Lake Park (27th, 52:35) were also inside the top third.

Emily Arens of Fargo won the Women’s 10K with a time of 45:01. DL’s Kamryn Gjersvig (8th, 48:15) and Michelle Hanson (10th, 48:39) both cracked the top 10. Joelle Williams (DL, 26th, 52:00), Kay Pederson (Lake Park, 27th, 52:05), and a cluster of lakes-area runners: Amanda Wik (Frazee, 52:53), Molly Anderson (Frazee, 52:54), Karen Spanswick (Ottertail, 53:12), Andrea Marthaler (Ottertail, 53:14), Nikki Fischer (Glyndon, 53:22), Natalie Thompson (Barnesville, 53:38), Andrea Judisch (DL, 54:01) and Lindsey Laux (Frazee, 54:25).

Hawley’s Daniel Borash won the Men’s Half Marathon with a time of 1:13:15. but Detroit Lakes landed two inside the top 20: Andy Moen (12th, 1:25:50) and Dean Schumann (16th, 1:27:45). The lakes area filled in strongly behind them with Eric Flyen (Lake Park, 1:35:09), Craig Isakson (Audubon, 1:36:32), Cody Martinson (Hawley, 1:37:24), Ethan Loock (Henning, 1:37:42), and Lawrence Mettler (Detroit Lakes, 1:39:26).

In the women’s race, Amy Will won decisively in 1:20:59, while area athletes dotted the top 15: Amy Forbes (Park Rapids, 6th, 1:30:27), Jackson Herzog (Detroit Lakes, 11th, 1:35:03), and Jessica Miller (Wadena, 14th, 1:37:23). Other local finishers included Abby Fostveit (DL, 1:42:32), Emily Warner (Staples, 1:45:42), and Sarah Nygaard (DL, 1:50:44).
