NEW YORK MILLS, Minn.– Regulation couldn’t contain Saturday’s Section 6A girls basketball matchup between New York Mills and Parkers Prairie. Extra time was needed after both teams were tied up at 47-47 when time expired in the second half.
It was Parkers Prairie who came away with a come from behind road win over New York Mills by a score of 57-49.
“We needed extra basketball to finish this one today,” said Parkers Prairie head girls basketball coach Hunter Haggenmiller. “Credit to the Eagles who hit a shot to tie the game with 4 seconds left and show us we need to be able to finish games, but our girls stepped up in a big way in overtime, knocking down two threes to give us a comfortable lead and make free throws to ice it.”
The Eagles found themselves with a slight lead at the end of the first half by a 28-27 margin. Leading the New York Mills scoring was Gabi Vaden with 19 points on the afternoon.
Panther scoring picked up in the second half to tie the affair at 47. Autumn Hartman led Parkers Prairie with 20, meanwhile by Vanessa Dorn finished with 17. Outside of the top two scorers, coach Haggenmiller knew it would take a team effort to grab another section win.
“Our bench presence was huge in the second half and overtime,” said Haggenmiller. “Nevaeh Koep, Bella Penrose, and Sydney Lorine gave us a spark when we needed it to come away with the victory.”
For New York Mills, the Eagles fall to 3-6 on the season. The Eagles are still looking for their first Section 6A win, currently 0-3 in their first three attempt. Their next contest will be a home matchup against Swanville on Tuesday with a 7:15 p.m. tip-off.
Parkers Prairie moves to 5-4 with the win, along with a 3-4 record in Section 6A contests. Hancock comes to Parkers Prairie on Tuesday for a Little Eight Conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m.
