WADENA, Minn (KWAD) — A new era begins for the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines dance team, as first-year head coach Danica Pederson, a a 2025 WDC grad who steps into the role after six years as a dancer in the program herself. With a strong returning group and a wave of young talent, the Wolverines are looking forward to a season full of growth, energy, and new possibilities.
Pederson is joined by a dedicated coaching staff that includes assistant coach Michaela Nelson and volunteers Macy Wynn and former head coach Maddi Horn—all former team members who know what it means to wear the Wolverines’ colors.
The Wolverines return several key dancers with varsity experience, led by captain Taya Larson (10th), along with Addie Wegscheid (10th), Brooklyn Leesberg (9th), Haylee Wegscheid (9th), Katie Pexa (9th), Hattie Truax (8th), and Cody Seelhammer (8th).
Larson and Wegscheid will also take on added responsibilities as team leaders and choreographers this season, helping guide a young but determined group.
Additional returnees include Mckinnely Bosl (10th), Brynn Rach (9th), Kavanna Sartori (8th), Riley Guck (8th), and Teagan Bernstetter (8th)—all expected to bring depth and energy to the roster.
The Wolverines welcome several newcomers ready to make an impact, including Ashley Wendland (11th), Aliyah Leesberg (7th), and Reagan Pexa (7th). With a large group of middle school contributors and a blend of experienced upperclassmen, Pederson sees a bright future for the program.
“We have a young team, full of energy and so much potential,” Pederson said. “All of these girls work so hard—if we keep it up, we’ll have a great season!”
Pederson’s focus this year is on technique and endurance, as the Wolverines work to expand their routines with new choreography and styles.
“Right now, we’re all about building stamina for our dances,” Pederson said. “We’re trying out new techniques, and they’re working great!”
Wadena-Deer Creek will compete in the AA classification for the first time after co-oping with Parkers Prairie, which brings new opponents and opportunities. Pederson said the team is excited to measure itself against some fresh faces and challenging programs.
“We’re excited to compete against new teams,” she said. “It’s a chance to grow and see how we stack up.”
The Wolverines graduated four seniors—Pederson, Macy Wynn, Braelyn Wegscheid, and Ava White—whose legacy of leadership continues to inspire the younger dancers. The team also extends gratitude to their biggest supporters—their parents—for making it all possible.
“This group has something special,” Pederson said. “They’re building their own tradition—and it’s exciting to watch.”
