EVANSVILLE, Minn. (KWAD) — A law enforcement pursuit of a stolen vehicle closed westbound Interstate 94 near Evansville on Monday and ended with two suspects in custody, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the Burgen Lake Rest Area near Alexandria just before 12:15 p.m. for a reported stolen vehicle. When they arrived, an adult male driver fled the scene with an adult female passenger, prompting a pursuit westbound on I-94.

The Sheriff’s Office said the driver avoided stop sticks but was later spun out with a PIT maneuver near mile marker 82. “The suspect immediately put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated rapidly in attempt to get away,” the agency said, noting deputies then used their squads to pin the vehicle against a guardrail.

During the standoff, the driver ignored verbal commands and donned a heavy winter coat and additional layers — a tactic law enforcement said is commonly used to try to defeat less-lethal tools. Highway camera footage showed officers with weapons drawn surrounding a boxed-in Porsche SUV.

An armored vehicle was brought in to provide cover, and deputies deployed PepperBall munitions into the SUV. The Sheriff’s Office said both occupants exited without incident and were arrested.

The driver, a 41-year-old man from Tower, and the passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Eveleth, were booked in connection with numerous charges, including fleeing and possession counts related to drugs, stolen property, and firearms or ammunition.

Westbound I-94 was closed in the area during the incident. Further details, including the timing of lane reopenings and formal charges, were not immediately released.
