WADENA, Minn.– A new era is now officially underway in Wadena-Deer Creek. That new chapter of Wolverine volleyball got off to a great start Tuesday night when new head coach Courtney Tumberg earned win no. one of her head coaching career.
WDC won each of the first three sets to sweep their season opening game on the road against Section 8AA rival East Grand Forks.
Tumberg takes over the Wolverine volleyball program after spending seven years on the staff as an assistant coach. Before guiding from the sidelines, Courtney (Volkmann) Tumberg earned the Class AA Player of the Year Award in 2010 when she helped lead the volleyball team to a state championship and perfect 33-0 record. A college career for Tumberg took place at Bemidji State where she played from 2011-2014. She collected 2,579 assists (360 sets), which is 6th most in Beaver program history.
The torch has officially been passed. Coach Tumberg is taking over the program from longtime WDC head coach Sue Volkmann. Volkmann retired last spring, ending a prolific coaching career where she finished with over 650 wins and the 2010 state championship. She began coaching the Henning/Deer Creek Cavaliers to coaching the majority of seasons of Wolverine volleyball since Wadena-Deer Creek consolidated. Tumberg is the daughter of Volkmann.
The next game for Wadena-Deer Creek is a matchup against another Section 8AA rival on the road against the Perham Yellowjackets on Thursday, August 28. Listen on the Superstation K-106 (105.9FM) or online at wadenaradio.com or the Superstation K-106 app. Pregame coverage begins at 7 p.m. and first serve is slated for 7:15 p.m.
