Question: I am serving in the military and my driver’s license is about to expire. I am not sure when I will be able to get it renewed. What are my options?

Answer: As an active duty U.S. military, Peace Corps or foreign service member who had a valid, unexpired Minnesota driver’s license or ID when you entered active service, you do not need to renew your license or ID until you separate, no matter how long you serve. This law also applies to your spouse and dependents stationed with you. You do not need to apply for a license or ID in the state you are stationed in unless you plan to change your residency to that state.

You may choose to renew your driver’s license or ID while serving. You can renew or apply for a duplicate driver’s license or ID by completing an out of state packet if you are living out of state or country.

After your separation from active service

You will not need to test to renew your Minnesota driver’s license if you return and apply within one year of separation. Bring your separation papers with you to apply.

•             You will have to retake the knowledge test if it has been more than one year since your separation.

•             You will have to retake the road test if it has been more than five years since your separation.
