Detroit Lakes Dance Team Earns Top Spot in Jazz, Second in Kick at Home Meet

DETROIT LAKES, MINN (KWAD) – The Detroit Lakes varsity dance team delivered an impressive performance Thursday, hosting the Minnesota State High School League AA/AAA dance team competition in Detroit Lakes on January 15.

In the Jazz category, Detroit Lakes Dance Team captured first place, finishing with a ranking point total of 3. Detroit Lakes outpaced a competitive field that included Bemidji, Alexandria, and Moorhead, earning top marks from judges across multiple categories including choreography, difficulty, and routine effectiveness.

Detroit Lakes followed that up with a strong showing in High Kick, where the Lakers earned a second-place finish with a ranking point total of 7. Bemidji claimed the top spot in High Kick, while Alexandria placed third and Moorhead finished fourth in the AA/AAA division.

Judges’ score sheets showed Detroit Lakes scoring particularly well in visual effectiveness, creativity, and difficulty across both routines, highlighting the team’s technical precision and performance quality. Competing on their home floor, the Lakers demonstrated consistency and composure against some of the region’s strongest dance programs.

Detroit Lakes continues its season with momentum as the team prepares for upcoming conference and section competitions.

Laker Dance will travel to STMA for an 9:00 am meet on Saturday, before closing out the regular season with a meet at Monticello on Saturday, January 24th.
