Father of two facing “long recovery” after derby car falls on his head

PARK RAPIDS, Minn. (KWAD) — The family of Elijah Hensel, a 25-year-old father of two, is seeking support after a serious garage accident left him with multiple injuries and an uncertain recovery timeline.

In the early-morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 18, Hensel was in his garage working on demolition-derby cars—a passion he pursues outside of work—when a car jack gave way. The vehicle fell onto the upper half of his body, pinning his skull between the car and the concrete floor. Friends who were working with him managed to lift the car, pull him free, and begin aid before EMS and police arrived.

Hensel was flown by Life Link to a St. Cloud hospital, where he underwent extensive tests and imaging to determine whether surgery would be required. As of now, doctors have not deemed any cosmetic surgery necessary.

According to the family, Hensel’s injuries include a skull fracture, fractures to the orbital and temporal bones with nerve damage to his eyes, two fractured ribs, and a contusion to his left lung. The trauma has made it difficult for him to see and hear, and he is expected to be out of work for an unknown amount of time, with healing potentially taking months.

A GoFundMe has been launched to help cover medical expenses and provide support for Hensel and his two children during his recovery. “This is going to be a long, tough recovery for him as he was always the guy on the go and always busy, whether with work or spending time with his family and friends,” the fundraiser notes.

First responders stabilized Hensel at the scene before he was airlifted. Further updates on his condition were not immediately available.
