MREA Announces Holly Becker, WDC High School Math, As Minnesota’s 2026 National Rural Teacher Of The Year Candidate

MREA is proud to announce that Holly Becker, a high school math teacher at Wadena Deer Creek Public Schools, has been selected by the MREA Board of Directors as Minnesota’s 2026 National Rural Teacher of the Year candidate.

Each year, MREA chooses one of its four Educators of Excellence to represent rural Minnesota nationally. As the state’s candidate, Holly will apply for the national award and attend the National Rural Education Association conference this October.

Holly’s passion, humor, and heart transforms math into a subject students love. She blends rigor with laughter and care, and has the ability to challenge her students while encouraging confidence and growth. Her classroom radiates connection and joy, embodying the power of rural schools to shape lives through strong relationships and lifelong learning.

“From the moment students step into her room, Holly’s approach is clear. She blends rigorous academics with humor, warmth, and an unmistakable sense of play. Her lessons challenge students to think deeply, but they’re wrapped in laughter, silliness, and a classroom energy that pulls everyone in. As one student shared, “She just makes it fun. She’s passionate about math, and you can tell she cares.””
