Original Live Music at the Cultural Center

NEW YORK MILLS, MN, October 12, 2026—The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center will welcome Chuck Suchy, North Dakota’s Official State Troubadour, for an evening of original live music on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with music beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Part of the Cultural Center’s 2026 Concert Series, the performance will take place in the Center’s intimate, listening-room-style gallery, offering audiences an opportunity to experience the songs and stories of one of the Great Plains’ distinctive musical voices.

A folk musician, songwriter, and working farmer from Mandan, North Dakota, Suchy draws deeply from the people, places, and experiences that have shaped his life on the prairie. Raised on his family’s farm, he writes songs celebrating family, farming, regional history, and the enduring connections between generations and the land.

Throughout his career, Suchy has released eight studio albums and performed at notable venues, including the Kennedy Center, as well as on A Prairie Home Companion. His contributions to North Dakota’s musical heritage were recognized when he was named the state’s Centennial Troubadour in 1989. In 2005, he became North Dakota’s first official State Troubadour.

Suchy’s songwriting blends heartfelt storytelling with a strong sense of place. His best-known works include “The Story of Hazel Miner,” a folk ballad commemorating 15-year-old Hazel Miner, who died in a March 1920 blizzard while saving her younger brother and sister. Other songs explore family history, roadside Americana, and the colorful stories found in everyday prairie life.

Chuck Suchy’s music offers a thoughtful and heartfelt window into life on the prairie. His songs celebrate the people, places, and stories that make this region unique, making this concert a wonderful opportunity to experience original music rooted in the spirit of the Great Plains.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Cultural Center members receive a $2 discount, and student tickets are $5. Seating is first come, first served. A cash bar and snacks will be available.
