A quick stop for an ice cream cone turned into a lifesaving moment for an Otter Tail County highway maintenance worker.
The Otter Tail County Board of Commissioners recognized Jeff Ratz at its Oct. 13 meeting. Ratz helped a choking person at a local convenience store while on his break.
A routine stop
On Sept. 2, Ratz was finishing his workday hauling shoulder mix, the gravel used to build up the edges of roads. He was heading back to the county’s Perham highway garage. He decided to take his break at a local convenience store and get an ice cream cone.
While he waited in line, Ratz noticed a person choking. He stepped in and performed the Heimlich maneuver. This first aid move uses quick, upward pushes on the stomach to force out something blocking a person’s airway.
Ratz removed a piece of chicken from the person’s windpipe. His quick actions most likely saved the person’s life.
Training made the difference
Otter Tail County Highway Department staff receive first aid training from the county. Ratz used that training and was ready to act when someone needed help.
“His actions demonstrate that being a Highway Department employee is about more than maintaining roads and equipment — it’s about looking out for others and making a positive difference where the opportunity arises,” said Colby Palmersheim, highway maintenance superintendent.
Board says thank you
At the Oct. 13 meeting, commissioners thanked Ratz for his quick thinking and fast response.
“We are proud of the actions you took and equally proud that you are a hero from the east side of the county,” joked Commissioner Dan Bucholz of District 1.
Ratz received a commendation plaque. His wife, Lisa, and his brother, Greg, attended the meeting as he was honored.
