FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (KWAD) — A longtime motorsports volunteer and official was killed Wednesday evening after being struck by a race car while crossing the track on an ATV during the Wissota 100 event at I-94 EMR Speedway.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. as the multiday Wissota Racing Association program was underway. According to authorities and event organizers, 57-year-old Scott Engfer, a respected board member of the Wissota Racing Association, was performing duties on the racing surface when a race car made contact with the ATV he was operating.
Emergency responders from Ringdahl Ambulance transported Engfer to Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls, where he later died from his injuries.
Racing was paused as rescue crews worked the scene but later resumed Wednesday night.
Engfer was widely known throughout Upper Midwest dirt-track racing circles for his years of officiating and volunteer work with Wissota. Fellow competitors, track crews, and fans expressed shock and grief on social media late Wednesday and Thursday, remembering him as a dedicated official who helped keep grassroots racing strong and safe.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office and event organizers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Wissota officials said safety protocols will be reviewed as part of the investigation.
I-94 EMR Speedway is hosting the multi-day Wissota 100, one of the premier late-season dirt track events in the region, drawing top drivers from across Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Funeral arrangements for Scott Engfer are pending.
