WADENA, Minn. (KWAD) – The Wadena-Deer Creek cross country program welcomed more than a dozen teams to Whitetail Run Golf Course on Tuesday for the 11th annual Johanna Olson Memorial Invite, their lone home meet of the 2025 season.
The meet honors the memory of Johanna Olson, a WDC graduate and standout runner who went on to become a two-time NCAA Division III national champion at Luther College before passing away in 2013 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
It was a breakout race for Karissa Anderson, a freshman from Border West, who surged to the front and never looked back. Anderson won the girls varsity race in a time of 19 minutes, 47.8 seconds, finishing 35 seconds ahead of runner-up Macie Josephson of United North Central (20:23.5).
Kahlen Suelflow of Sauk Centre claimed third in 20:33.8, while Norah Froslee of Parkers Prairie (21:01.1) and Nori Song of Minnewaska Area (21:13.5) rounded out the top five.
Wadena-Deer Creek’s top finisher was junior Karly Haverkamp, who placed eighth in 21:24.6, leading three Wolverines inside the top 20. Seniors Lydia Oldakowski (19th, 22:41.6) and junior Brielle Kern (20th, 22:43.8) added crucial depth for the home squad.
In the team standings, United North Central placed five runners in the top 20 and edged out Parkers Prairie for the team championship with 58 points. The Panthers finished second with 83 points, paced by Froslee’s fourth-place finish and a strong pack that included three top-10 finishers.
Wadena-Deer Creek gave its home crowd plenty to cheer about, finishing a close third with 90 points, while Minnewaska Area (97) and Sauk Centre (112) rounded out the top five. Pillager (181), Park Rapids Area (183), and Ottertail Central (189) filled out the top eight.
On the boys side, Sauk Centre delivered a statement with five runners inside the top 12 to secure the team championship with 29 points.
Junior Logan Wiehoff led the way individually, winning the boys race in 16:57.7. His teammate, reigning 6A champion senior Jacob Drevlow, was runner-up in 17:20.6, giving the Mainstreeters a powerful 1-2 punch. Sauk Centre also placed senior Zaron Olmschenk sixth, senior Landon Buysse eighth, and junior Ben Friedrichs 12th to lock up the victory.
Grant Nelson of Wadena-Deer Creek ran strong to finish third in 17:30.1, while teammate Owen Anderson took seventh (18:29.0). The Wolverines packed five runners inside the top 15, earning them second place as a team with 52 points.
Park Rapids Area placed three runners in the top 11, led by sophomore Jack Mitteness in fifth (17:58.7), to finish third in the team standings with 66 points.
