Wadena County Sheriff Michael Carr announced he will not seek a sixth term in office, marking the eventual conclusion of a 32-year career in law enforcement and 19 years as Wadena County’s sheriff.
In a statement released by the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office, Carr said the decision came after “much thought and reflection,” calling it a profound honor to have been elected to five terms by the people of Wadena County.
“There is no greater honor than being chosen by the people of Wadena County to serve you as your Sheriff,” Carr said.
Carr expressed gratitude to county residents for their trust and support, as well as to current and former employees who served alongside him throughout his career. He credited the accomplishments of the office to the dedication, integrity, and character of the men and women who work there.
He said the sheriff’s office is now a strong, well-prepared, “turnkey” operation staffed by some of the finest law enforcement professionals in central Minnesota—individuals who protect and serve the public while putting themselves in harm’s way each day.
While Carr said he still loves the job and would continue serving if needed, he believes the timing is right to step away with the office in a strong position for the future. He confirmed he has one full year remaining in his current term and pledged to finish it with the same dedication and commitment he has shown throughout his tenure.
Carr also thanked the community for its continued support of law enforcement, his family and friends for their unwavering encouragement, and his faith for guiding and protecting both staff and the community.
“Serving as your sheriff has been the greatest honor of my life,” Carr said. “I will leave this office confident in the people who carry the badge forward and grateful beyond words for the opportunity you gave me.”
