Our next Wolverine Player Spotlight puts the focus on Lydia Helmbrecht! The senior played in her final matches of her WDC girls tennis career last week.
Here is what co-head girl’s tennis coaches Lindy Thompson and Jil Fiemeyer had to say about Lydia.
“Lydia has been an asset to our team this year. She is willing to be flexible and has played in different positions without complaining, even if it wasn’t her first choice. Throughout the season she has worked on strengthening her mental game and we really saw that come out during her section matches. While she wasn’t able to get a win, you wouldn’t have known it from what we saw on the courts. She kept a positive attitude throughout and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge that the matches presented. She worked hard and hustled on the courts. After she finished playing, she was a great cheerleader and offered support to her teammates who were still competing. I am very proud of the way Lydia finished the season and I know that she will go on to do awesome things in her future. We will miss her next year!! ” – Coach Thompson
“Lydia has worked incredibly hard not only on her game, but also on her mindset. I was so incredibly proud of how she put everything into her matches at sections and played the best matches I have ever seen her play. Her scores do not reflect the quality matches she had. I believe that good brings out good in other players, and that is what I saw from Lydia. Both of her opponents had to play really good ball to beat her because she had solid shots, a magnificent mindset and really nice serves. She had to play the No. 1 seed in the individual portion of the tournament, and I was so incredibly proud how she played solid tennis right up onto the last point. And, not only did Lydia play wonderful tennis at sections, she is a great teammate on and off the court. She is kind, respectful and always looking out for others – especially those who may be more quiet or left out. Lydia is a classy, one-of-a-kind player who is going to do great things after graduation. We are very proud of her and its is an honor to be her coach!” – Jil Fiemeyer
