Powerful Storm Batters Bemidji, Leaves Trail of Destruction
BEMIDJI, Minn. — A powerful storm packing wind gusts of up to 106 mph tore through Bemidji early Saturday, toppling trees, downing power lines and leaving thousands without electricity across Beltrami County.
The National Weather Service reported the peak wind speed at Bemidji Regional Airport around 12:45 a.m., as the storm system swept across northern Minnesota.
Flash flooding stranded vehicles and uprooted trees, while emergency crews responded to reports of people trapped in cars. No casualties were reported as of Sunday morning, but many residents were displaced. The Sanford Convention Center has been opened as a temporary shelter.
The Beltrami County Emergency Operations Center has been also activated. Coordinating with the Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management agency will assess damage and support recovery efforts. Officials warned residents to expect long-term power outages due to significant infrastructure damage. As of Saturday morning, nearly 30,000 customers in northern Minnesota remained without electricity. Crews from all over Minnesota were on hand to begin repairs.
With such extensive damage a fund has been set up by the United Way to raise funds for those in need.
